North Haven is a beautiful neighborhood that is unique in that it is kind of tucked away and quiet, small, and without through traffic (due to a vehicle trap in the neighborhood that prevents people from cutting through). It boasts lots of cute bungalows, big trees, green space, and easy access to Nose Creek park. I am somewhat biased though, as I live here! It is a friendly neighborhood with a community feel and a wonderful elementary school. From parts of the community there are awesome views of downtown too!
Location and Amenities:
North Haven is a North West Community that was established in 1963. It is primarily single family bungalows, with some split and two level homes, as well as townhouses, duplexes, an apartment style condo building on 14th Street and an apartment building. It is bordered by 14th Street and Nose Hill Park on the West (with a tunnel that goes under 14th street for easy access to the park), by John Laurie Boulevard on the South, and Egerts Park on the East, which separates it from Thorncliffe.
North Haven has an active Community Association and Community Hall that offers neighborhood events on a regular basis. Past events have included Easter Egg hunts, community BBQ’s, Community Garage Sales and more. They also have a Preschool run out of the hall, and Girl Guides and Scouts groups that meet there.
Local Businesses and Services:
Being a small neighborhood, there are only a couple small businesses within the neighborhood itself, but there is easy access to several shopping centers. In the community there is a Hair Salon, Senora’s, which is run by a stylist names Mason, who does great cuts, for great prices. He is super friendly and outgoing, and my daughter and I love getting my hair cut there. Next to him there is a Convenience store with a very friendly owner, who stays open long hours and always has what you need in a pinch. On the other side of the complex is Mona’s Pizza, which has awesome pizza and great service with quick delivery. They have won many awards for their pizza over the years, and I’ve heard good things about their other offerings. You can find them online at Mona’s Pizza.
The Calgary Winter Club is just across 14th Street, and there is a strip mall on the edge of the community on 14th as well with a Barbershop, Paint Store, Seafood restaurant, liquor store and convenience store.
North Haven has several parks and playgrounds, making the neighborhood great for kids, hikers, dog owners, walkers and cyclists. There is a tunnel that goes under 14th that leads directly to Nose Hill Park which is the 2nd largest urban park in Canada. It has numerous walking paths and dedicated off leash areas. Check out Dana’s review of the park on Calgary Playground Review .
Egerts Park is on the East side of North Haven and has a small park that my daughter loves for the tire swing. It also has a path running all the way through it, awesome for walks and bike rides.
There are also a couple playgrounds worth mentioning. The school playground is awesome – see the review here. Then there is a playground and large park where the kids play soccer, a baseball diamond, and an ice rink built by the community association every year. See Calgary Playgrounds review of that park here. Then there is another larger park tucked away in the community, and you can read the review of it here.
I have done the demographics for Upper North Haven and Lower North Haven separately as they are considered two distinct communities by the city, however, the Community Association is working on correcting this.
Number of dwellings: Lower – 2434, Upper – 242, Total – 2676
Percentage of homes that are owner occupied: Lower – 68%, Upper – 93%
Percentage of single family homes: Lower – 61%, Upper – 100%
Median Age: Lower – 44, Upper – 48
Percentage of population that is male: Lower – 48%, Upper – 49%
Average # of children: 0.9 – Lower, Upper – 1. The average in Calgary is 1.1, North Haven comes under that in both Upper and Lower North Haven. North Haven has a large population of retired residents that have lived here their entire lives, however, the number of young families is increasing.
Note: these stats are from the City of Calgary Community Profiles which include 2014 Census Data and the 2011 National Household Survey. For the complete profile, see the City of Calgary Profiles.
North Haven has it's own Elementary school called North Haven Elementary. My daughter attends the school, and we have had nothing but great experiences so far. They offer a regular program and a program for complex needs. Their website is: North Haven Elementary.
